QR Codes in Healthcare: Privacy and Safety Considerations

Healthcare raises the consequences of a wrong destination, outdated instruction, exposed identifier, or inaccessible workflow. A QR code should be treated as one component in a reviewed clinical, privacy, security, and communication system - not as a shortcut around it.

Keep sensitive data out of public patterns

Do not place diagnoses, record numbers, appointment details, medication information, or other identifiable health data directly in a public or easily photographed code. A protected patient action should use an approved authenticated system with short-lived, appropriately scoped tokens.

Distinguish education from medical direction

A public code may link to reviewed general visiting information or patient education. Visible materials should identify the responsible organization, review date, and intended audience. Urgent instructions and emergency pathways must not depend on a scan, network, or personal phone.

Clinical content requires qualified review and change control. An update date should reflect substantive review, not an automated timestamp.

Original waiting-room example

A clinic poster links to an accessible page explaining parking, interpreter access, and preparation questions for a general service. It does not expose appointment information or replace staff assistance. The expected clinic domain is printed below the code, and staff inspect the poster for overlays.

Threats and failures

Sticker substitution can send patients to phishing pages. Shortened or unfamiliar domains make verification harder. Poor connectivity, low digital literacy, disability, language needs, or shared-device privacy can block access. Provide visible alternatives and trained human help.
